TFE has published its latest piece of research in Rugby League. Following on from the first Rugby League Fan Engagement Index, the report explores the evolution of fan engagement across the rugby league pyramid in England.
While the sport benefits from strong historical ties with a specific segment of the public, clubs must increasingly look beyond their traditional base and recognise the need to strengthen their relevance and connection within their communities.
Rising competition from more commercially dominant sports, particularly football, further reinforces the need for rugby league to create its own niche. It is therefore crucial to examine how fan engagement can evolve by analysing current practices and mechanisms, as well as their ability to raise greater awareness of transparency, governance, and stakeholder involvement in rugby league. These approaches range from consultations with fan groups on branding matters to more in-depth participation in operational and business-related decision-making.
